Monthly Achievements | June 2014

Hola Sparkly1s

I feel like each time I'm gonna write one of these Monthly Achievement posts I'll look back and think 'wow this months gone fast.'  It's so nice just to spend a few moments looking back on the past few weeks of my life and I would encourage you all to try and do it.  It really makes me value the little things I'm achieved along the way.

Continuing my healthy eating.  If you read my Fitness Fridays you'll know I've experienced some wobbles this month.  I've really had to try hard and be determined not to slip back into unhealthy eating habits and so far I'm achieving it.  I'm making conscious decisions not to reach for that bag of crisps and grab a few nuts or a piece of fruit instead.

Growing my nails.  Check these beauties out!  They're almost how I want them.  I've talked about my nail polish obsession before and how I don't paint my nails.  This month I've made a real effort with my nails and I've managed to grow them.  I bought some Essie Grow Stronger Base Coat from Boots and I really think it's helped.

(This sounds like a real shallow achievement. But I'm pleased with myself so I've added it anyway!)

Writing 27 blogposts.  This is only my second month blogging and I'm really pleased with myself with what I've achieved.  I'm definitely finding my feet and am so pleased I decided to start this little blog.  It's wonderful to have this creative outlet.

Keeping my mouth shut and avoiding an argument.  If you ever get to know me well enough you will find out I'm quite an opinionated thing.  Recently I was browsing Pinterest and came across this little beauty.

I feel like ever since then it's kinda stayed with me.  It's so true.  I've been in a few situations since where I've thought, 'You're just looking for an argument.'  You know, those occasions when someone just seems to be saying anything they can to disagree with you or get a rise outta you?   The old me would have taken them up on the offer.  (Like I said, I'm opinionated.)  The new me takes a second to think about it.  Am I really that bothered?  Is it worth the argument?  9 times outta 10 it isn't.  So I just don't take them on and walk away.

Have you done anything this month you're really proud of?  However big or small. I'd love to hear about it.

Take a moment now to think of one thing you've achieved this month and give yourself a pat on the back.

Fashion 5 | Asos Swing Dresses

I love a swingskater style dress.

As a size 12 typical apple shape i.e I carry all my weight round my tummy, I find them perfect.  They show off my slim(ish) legs and cover my belly.  Yet fit slightly on top so I'm not looking like a big sack of potatoes.

What do you think of these 5 I've picked out from Asos?  I think number 1 is my favourite.  I love the print and the simple black and white.

Throwback Thursday | It's My Birthday!!

It's my birthday!  Yeayyy!!

I like to pretend its my 21st. It's been my 21st for the past 12 years now. Wow I'm officially old. Really old.

Throwback Thursday could only be one thing on my birthday - a look at a birthday past.

These pics are from my 6th birthday way way back in 1988 (as you can probably tell by the fabulous 80s party dress I'm wearing)

My cake looks like a computer with a unicorn on the screen. I didn't even think we had a computer in 1988! Maybe we didn't, maybe I wanted a computer for my birthday and this was the nearest thing I got to it.  I'll have to ask my mum.

Seeing as I say each birthday is my 21st I couldn't do this post without throwing in a picture from my actual 21st.  This was taken in Kardamena, Kos.  I'd just split up with my boyfriend of 4 years and went on my first (and only) girlie holiday.  It's a pretty fair assessment to say I don't remember that much about that holiday apart from sun, sea, cocktails and bunch of fun.

What I Ate Wednesday {25.6.14}

Hola Sparkly1s

How are you doing today? I hope you've had a good week so far. I'm super excited as it's my, ahem 21st (?) birthday tomorrow.  I've got an amazing present coming in the post tomorrow and I sooo can't wait.  But more about that later.

It's a #WIAW today so let's crack on with it.

Breakfast

Breakfast was something completely different for me today, inspired by the lovely Linda over at I Am Linderella. A piece of wholemeal toast, topped with a mashed banana and boiled egg white. I was surprised by how much I liked this as it seemed like an odd combination to me but hey, I'm all up for trying new things.

Lunch

What's this I hear you say? No avocado & tomato on toast? If you're a regular reader of my #WIAW you'll realise by now that this is a complete change for me to my normal eats. I'm making an effort to eat a wider variety if foods and I'm really enjoying it.
This tasty lunch was a take on a Spanish Tortilla. I include loads of veg in mine though to make it better for me.  This one was fried onion, bell peppers, courgette, peas and spinach with slices of boiled potato.  I then mixed them with 2 whole eggs and 3 egg whites, splash of almond milk and cooked it like a thick omelette.  I tend to make a big one and it lasts me a couple of days, eaten warm or cold.

I served it today with steamed veg - broccoli, peas, sweetcorn and spinach sprinkled with a few chilli flakes.

3pm Snack

I felt like my day was seriously lacking in fruit so decided to have a bowl of mixed berries and half an apple.

Tea

This little handful if nuts was my tea today. I was really quite full after my 3pm snack and was really busy so I just kinda forgot to eat tea which was a bit naughty of me.

Zoella Inspired Milkmaid Braid

Hola Sparkly1s

A few months ago I read Zoella's milkmaid braid post.  I thought it looked like a really fun, easy way to do your hair.  Then, last month she posted her 'how to' video on YouTube.  I'm not someone who spends a lot of time on my hair and it's something I want to change.  Generally, I just leave it hanging or 'whack' it up in a pony but I thought I'd give this one a go.

 I'd washed my hair in the morning and left it to dry naturally.  In Zoe's she backcombs and uses dry shampoo but all I used was blonde hair grips and mini clear elastics.

I was surprised at how easy it was for me to do.  For someone who's literally hopeless at doing her own hair I think it turned out pretty good.  My hair isn't quite as long as Zoes so my braids stopped about an inch above my ears. But that was ok as I just pinned them underneath the other braid.

I got so many positive comments when I went out.  Everyone I know is used to seeing me with my hair left down I think it was a big shock for them.  It's definitely a style I'm going to wear again.

Shape Up For Summer Progress {20.6.14}

Hola Sparkly1s

It's Fitness Friday and time for another catch up with my Shape Up For Summer.  As I'm writing this I'm feeling bummed about it all.  I've just taken my measurements and weighed myself.

Weight - 159lbs   {-1lbs}
Waist - 36inches {same}
Hips - 42.75inches {same}
Bust - 35inches {same}

You see why I'm feeling bummed now.  I feel very demotivated.  Realistically I know what the problem is.  I'm not exercising enough.  I'm still loving my hooping.  I'm hooping pretty much every day for around 20 minutes but I need to step it up a notch now.  I need to challenge myself.  20 minutes non-stop hula hooping comes easy to me now so I've been looking more and more into hoop dancing and definitely feel like I want to give it a go.  It looks like a MAJOR workout!

Hooping really is so much fun.  I wasn't sure if I could use the hoop I have though.  It's quite chunky and heavy so I thought I would need a 'dance hoop' as opposed to a 'fitness hoop.'  This helped me out into deciding I need a lighter hoop to dance with.

Check out this awesome video of a really talented hooper.

I know that this is my wobble AND the time when I could easily give up.  I also know it's the time when, because I'm not seeing results quick enough, I start doing silly things like missing meals.  I've been eating really healthy for the past few weeks and I've been enjoying the freshness of my home cooked meals.  I definitely feel like the amount of carbs in my diet were making me feel sluggish, bloated and generally just bleh.

Anyone got any advice for when things aren't going as you'd like?  I'm determined not to give up.

Throwback Thursday | Sisters Graduation

Hola Sparkly1s

One of my favourite photos of my Dad and Mini Greenoid
Thursday only means one thing here on Gemzicle Sprinkles... #Throwback Thursday. I say it every week but I love looking through old photos.
This weeks #TBT is more recent, just over 3 years ago.
My younger sister Lara got the super brains in the family and went to Oxford University.  I didn't know this but, apparently, you can choose when to graduate? Have you been to uni? Could choose when you graduate? When I went to uni I just graduated as soon as I finished my course but she delayed hers as she wanted Mini Greenoid to attend.  When we found out my Dad was sick she booked her graduation as quick as possible so our Dad could attend.

I don't know if you've ever been to a graduation ceremony but they're not the most exciting of things but this one, jeez, this one took the biscuit! It was in Latin! Yeap. Latin. Hours and hours of someone speaking something about something I couldn't understand.

It was a fun day overall though.  We watched the ceremony, then went to the celebration lunch.

Link your #TBT in the comments. I love seeing them.

What I Ate Wednesday {18.6.14}

Hola Sparkly1s

I hope you've had a lovely today.  The weather has been glorious here today and I've eaten all my meals outside. We've had the paddling pool out for the kids, I've been to a Sports Day at school and sat soaking up the sun while it lasts.
I definitely think the warm weather encourages me to eat healthier as I think I'm more inclined to make a yummy salad instead of fatty, comfort food.

Breakfast

I just had to instagram this photo of breakfast. It was delicious, especially with the warm, morning sun peaking over the house.
It's pretty similar to my normal breakfast but today I had natural yoghurt, topped with frozen forest fruits (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and cranberries), finished off with a sprinkling of sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. I prepared it 30 minutes before eating it to allow the fruit to thaw slightly. It was sooo scrummy!

Lunch

A rare treat of going out for lunch today. We took the kids to The Derby Arms, a local pub, as they have a nice outdoor play area for them to play.  I always struggle when I go out to find something semi healthy but on this occasion the only vegetarian options were egg sandwich or cheese and beans on jacket.  As I knew I was having potato for tea I decided to opt for egg sandwich with no butter (this isn't a health thing, I just don't like butter on sandwiches), on brown bread. It could be served with salad, coleslaw and tortilla chips or greasy, yummy, homemade pub chips... I was good and opted for the salad.  I have to say it was really nice and if you're ever around Ormskirk call in for a lunch.

Tea

I wasn't hungry at all really come tea time. So I cooked the smallest sweet potato I had to serve with my special beans. You can find the recipe in this post.

What did you have to eat today?  I love checking out the #WIAW on Twitter.
